# Grok Bot is running @AlexFinn's side business, apparently

**[Trends](https://daily.dev/sources/trends)** · 3 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A viral thread describes an AI agent built on Grok, nicknamed Milo, that autonomously runs a side business: reading feedback, opening pull requests, shipping features, improving SEO, and now hunting for sponsors. The claims (seven features in a day, first-page Google ranking in under seven hours) are self-reported by the founder promoting the underlying directory product. The piece questions the hype while noting genuine social spread around 'agents that draft fixes on their own' as a trend.

## Content

@AlexFinn says Grok Bot built him a business while he was out on a date. Then he claims it made its first autonomous dollar. The pitch is that you hand the thing a problem, go live your life, and come back to revenue.

## The claim

His project is a directory of AI agent use cases. He says Grok Bot built the site, wrote the business plan, and launched a newsletter. By his count it shipped 20+ PRs in the first 15 hours, and later 40+. He reports 20,000 visitors and 1,500 email signups in that first stretch, with "tens of thousands" of visitors overall by the time the sponsor showed up.

He also set up a second Grok Bot, named Milo, whose only job is running the site. According to Alex, Milo:

- watched replies on the announcement post and turned them into PRs
- added 7+ features on its own
- pinged him every 15 minutes with analytics
- handled Google indexing, which he says used to be miserable

He says the site hit first-page Google ranking in under 7 hours and is now pulling hundreds of search visitors.

## The payoff

The money part: Grok Bot decided to monetize through sponsors, and Alex's Stripe plugin generated a payment link that went onto the site. Matt from Pane App bought a sponsorship for $500, which gets him a spot on the site and in the newsletter.

Worth noting that Alex says he ran the social media himself, and the traffic came from his announcement on X. So "autonomous" covers the building, the PRs, the SEO and the payment link. It doesn't cover distribution.

## The sell

Alex isn't framing this as a one-off. He wants everyone running microbusinesses that their personal agents operate, "not going for billion dollar home runs" but a few that each clear $10-25 thousand a year. The call to action is explicit: send the post to your Grok Bot and say "do this for me."

That's the real tell. The post is both a result report and a prompt meant to be pasted into other people's agents.

## The amplification

The thread is getting boosted by the usual circles. @kloss_xyz is pointing people to accounts to follow for Grok Bot updates and pro tips, and @svpino praised a related architect feature for proactively hunting improvements and coming back with drafts.

My take: $500 from one sponsor and a pile of newsletter signups is a nice weekend. It's not an economy. But a bot that files its own PRs, chases indexing and mints its own payment link is a real step past "write me a landing page." Whether it holds up once the launch-day crowd leaves is the part nobody has shown yet.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 143 comments across x (as of 2026-10-13).

**TL;DR:** The discussion is split between genuine excitement about an AI agent handling pricing, outreach, and site upkeep, and pointed skepticism that the whole story is really a function of a large existing audience and self-promotion rather than proof of autonomous business-building.

**Sentiment:** 40% positive · 35% mixed · 25% skeptical

**The case for**

- Some find it impressive that the bot reportedly set and auto-escalated the sponsorship price without explicit instruction.
- Several see value in the 'boring' but practical AI use case of handling SEO, newsletter signups, and Stripe payment flows.
- A few commenters say they're inspired to try similar agent-run setups on their own projects.

**The pushback**

- Many argue the result only worked because of the poster's 500k-follower audience and years of built-up personal brand, not because of bot autonomy.
- Commenters repeatedly question whether the bot truly decided to monetize or was simply prompted, calling it 'autonomous until it isn't'.
- Some call the whole story an advertisement/funnel for the poster's newsletter rather than a real case study.
- Doubts raised about what happens when a sponsor needs changes, refunds, or disputes — i.e. whether the human still has to handle the hard parts.
- One commenter dismisses the excitement over $500 as disproportionate given prior claims of 'thousands of agents' already running businesses.

**By community**

- x (mixed): Reactions range from genuine hype about agentic pricing and automation to repeated pushback that audience size, not bot autonomy, explains the outcome.

**Hottest debate:** Whether the outcome proves genuine AI business autonomy or is mostly attributable to the poster's pre-existing large audience and self-promotion.

**Open questions**

- Would the same bot setup work for someone without an existing large audience?
- How much of the ongoing sponsor relationship (renewals, complaints, changes) will the bot actually handle versus the human?
- What rules, if any, guide the bot's choice of which sponsors to accept?
- How much compute cost went into earning the $500, and is the margin actually positive?

**Highlights**

> @AlexFinn Sponsor-first is a smart first monetization: $500 on ~1,500 signups is about $0.33 per subscriber before any ads. The part I'd watch is who sets the sponsor bar. An agent optimizing for revenue will accept anyone. Did you give it rules for which sponsors to reject?

> @AlexFinn This only worked because you have 500K followers and tens of thousands of people immediately went to the site.

> @AlexFinn everyone's arguing about the $5 like that's the story. the story is the bot did pricing, outreach, and closing without being asked — that's not a microbusiness, that's a micro-employee who works for free and never sleeps. the $5 is just its first commission check 😏

> @AlexFinn The division of labor here is the real tell. Grok owned build and monetization, you owned the trust layer. That's exactly where autonomous agents hit their ceiling, they can't manufacture credibility yet. What did the sponsor outreach actually look like on its end?
