# gRPC-Rust Roadmap

**[gRPC Blog](https://daily.dev/sources/grpc-blog)** · 3 min read · 69 upvotes · 6 comments

## Summary

The gRPC-Rust team outlines its roadmap following the client-side preview release. The server API is the top priority, alongside health checking, message compression, and completing the full gRPC interop test suite for production readiness. Longer-term plans include retries, binary logging, channelz debugging, keepalive, authorization, full xDS/Envoy support for proxyless service mesh and Google Cloud direct connectivity, a shared Rust status type pending stabilization of the Try trait, and performance tuning around memory usage and zero-copy HTTP/2. The team also announces gRPConf 2026 at the Computer History Museum on September 3rd with an open CFP.

## Questions this post answers

### Is there a server-side API for gRPC-Rust yet?

Not yet as a released feature; it is under active development as the biggest priority following the client-side preview release. It will be built as a natural extension of the client API, sharing types where possible, with another preview announcement planned once it is ready.

_Rust developers building RPC services can follow gRPC-Rust's progress toward a server API on daily.dev._

### What Google Cloud use cases does xDS support enable for gRPC-Rust?

Full xDS support, built on Envoy, enables both proxyless service mesh (PSM) use cases and direct connectivity for Google Cloud services. This is described as a longer-term goal the gRPC-Rust team plans to focus heavily on over the following several months, alongside significant features like retries, binary logging, Channelz debugging, keepalive, and authorization.

_Engineers evaluating service mesh options for Rust services can track xDS and Envoy developments via daily.dev._

### Why hasn't gRPC-Rust adopted Abseil's Status type directly?

gRPC-Rust intends to standardize on a shared Rust RPC status type rather than reuse Abseil's Status directly, because minor internal differences between the C++ gRPC status type and absl::Status have caused pain despite their similarity. The team is waiting for stabilization of Rust's Try trait, which will let the new type ergonomically support useful features.

_Rust API designers weighing error-handling tradeoffs can keep up with Try trait stabilization news on daily.dev._

> kind of wild the official [grpc.io](http://grpc.io) rust bindings are still client-preview when tonic's had a solid server impl for years. is anyone here actually planning to migrate off tonic once this stabilizes, or is this more for shops that need the canonical C-core semantics (auth, xDS, channelz) tonic doesn't chase?

> Production-worthy is the interop suite. Memory, zero-copy, and lower-level HTTP/2 wait behind retries, channelz, keepalive, authz, and xDS
