# Guest Post: What a High School Student Found When He Stress-Tested a Quantum Benchmark

## Summary

A high school student independently built QECops, an open-source Monte Carlo framework for quantum error correction (QEC) diagnostics, to investigate whether pseudo-thresholds — widely used benchmark values for QEC codes — are reliable across different noise models. The key finding: under correlated noise, the pseudo-threshold dropped by over 52% compared to the independent bit-flip baseline, and at a fixed physical error rate of 0.400, the two noise models produced opposite qualitative conclusions about whether increasing code distance helps. Bootstrap confidence intervals and sensitivity analysis revealed that pseudo-thresholds can become ill-defined under correlated noise, yet they are routinely reported as bare numbers without uncertainty. The work argues for uncertainty-aware reporting of QEC benchmarks as hardware decisions increasingly depend on them. The paper and code are publicly available on Zenodo and GitHub.
