# Hacking Amazon Echo Show 8 3rd Gen Via UART And EMMC

**[Hackaday](https://daily.dev/sources/hackaday)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A hardware hacker demonstrates how to root and repurpose the Amazon Echo Show 8 3rd Gen by physically accessing the device's eMMC chip and UART pads on the mainboard. Since ADB and bootloader exploits are locked down on this device, the method requires opening the device, removing the metal shield over the eMMC, soldering fine wires to eMMC and UART pads, and using an eMMC programmer to directly modify system files. This enables rooting FireOS or even replacing the firmware entirely with a Debian Linux installation. The process is technically demanding but proves the device can be repurposed beyond Amazon's intended use.
