# Half-Life ported to Mac OS 9

**[Hacker News](https://daily.dev/sources/hn)** · 1 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A GitHub user known as doctashay has successfully ported Half-Life (along with Blue Shift and Opposing Force) to Mac OS 9 for PowerPC-based Macintosh computers, 28 years after the game's original release. Valve had originally planned a Mac OS 9 release in 1999 but cancelled it before launch. The port supports G3 and G4 PowerPC machines running Mac OS 9.0 or later, with performance dependent on available GPU VRAM (at least 8MB recommended).

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 97 comments across hackernews (as of 2026-07-29).

**TL;DR:** The community is enthusiastic and nostalgic about Half-Life finally being ported to Mac OS 9, with many sharing fond memories of being Mac users who missed out on the game in 1999. Side discussions touch on gaming on Apple Silicon, the Xash3D engine, and AI-assisted retro porting.

**Sentiment:** 70% positive · 20% mixed · 10% skeptical

**The case for**

- Commenters celebrate the impressive technical achievement of running a 1998 game engine on an OS Apple tried to retire.
- Several users confirmed it runs well on real period hardware like iBook G3 and iMac G4.
- The port is noted as period-correct for the original iMac G3/DV era, adding historical authenticity.
- The existence of the open-source Xash3D/GoldSrc recreation (active since 2011) was highlighted as a notable discovery.

**The pushback**

- Questions raised about whether Xash3D is truly open-source, with claims it originated from leaked/decompiled code and still requires a proprietary HLSDK.
- The port's relevance is limited by the scarcity of working period hardware in people's hands today.
- Frustration expressed that modern Apple Silicon still can't natively run most Steam games, making this feel bittersweet.

**By community**

- hackernews (positive): Commenters are warmly nostalgic and impressed, with lively tangents about Apple Silicon gaming, Bungie history, and retro porting efforts.

**Hottest debate:** Whether Xash3D is genuinely open-source or derived from leaked/decompiled Half-Life engine code.

**Open questions**

- Does the OS 9 build include Blue Shift and Opposing Force, or are those only in the Tiger/Leopard ports?
- Is Xash3D truly open-source, or does it rely on leaked/decompiled code and a proprietary HLSDK?
- Will AI-assisted porting eventually make it feasible to revive many other 'obsolete' platform ports?

**Highlights**

> the real achievement here is getting a 1998 game engine to run on an OS that Apple actively tried to erase from existence. Half-Life outlived both Mac OS 9 and the Performa line.

> The most interesting thing about this link, for me, is seeing that there's an open-source recreation of GoldSrc [0]? That's apparently been around since 2011 [1]? I'm stunned I haven't heard about this before. Very cool. [0] https://github.com/fwgs/xash3d-fwgs [1] https://www.moddb.com/engines/xash3d-engine

> Runs nicely on my iBook G3! Is the OS 9 build supposed to include Blue Shift and Opposing Force, or is that only a reference to the Tiger and Leopard ports? Just tried out the Tiger port on my iMac G4; it also runs fine!

> I sometimes wonder what the timeline where Bungie didn't write the Myth II uninstaller-can-wipe-your-hard-drive bug would look like. IIUC, the fact that they reprinted all the discs and manually replaced all the boxed, ready-to-ship discs to avoid any chance of destroying someone's data wound up eating most of the profits from Myth II. That, in turn, led to the situation where they were too cash-strapped to finish Halo on their own, resulting in the infamous moment where Apple decided to buy them after all just a couple days too late: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2010/10/jobs-turned-down-bung... I still fantasize about an Oni-meets-Mirror's-Edge freerunning / martial arts game. Maybe there'd have been one if not for that bug.

> I think the technology also dictated it. It’s easy to forget that in those days the idea of window chrome being full color, full transparency, with live window dragging and visuals not locked to tiling 8x8 or at best 32x32 elements was incredibly novel. And that was as much about preemptive multitasking and expecting and allowing every application to keep its windows up to date as it was about Quartz. Aqua was garish and in your face, but it needed to be in order to be a symbol of what the system had achieved, which I think was especially important because that came at the cost of being a buggy, immature OS that had to run crucial apps in a hideous compatibility mode while it was getting established. Edit: and if I can be a cranky old codger for a moment, I think that Liquid Glass unintentionally serves just as well as a symbol for what Apple has become: a company grasping to relive the memory of innovation without remembering how to innovate.
