A Pew Research Center survey of 5,119 US adults finds that 49% now use AI chatbots (up from ~33% in 2024), with ChatGPT leading at 44% usage. Despite growing adoption, 40% believe AI will worsen society, 67% have little confidence in government regulation, and 59% distrust companies to develop AI responsibly. The most common chatbot use case is information searching (42%), followed by entertainment and image/video creation. Job anxiety is significant — only 23% of the public expect AI to positively impact jobs over 20 years, versus 73% of AI experts. Of non-users, 60% cite disinterest rather than lack of access. The data reveals a widening gap between AI adoption and institutional trust.
