# Hex Raises $100M

**[Hacker News](https://daily.dev/sources/hn)** · 6 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Hex raised $100 million at a $1.2 billion valuation, led by PeakXV and 137 Ventures, with participation from Amplify, Avra, a16z, Redpoint, Sequoia, and Zero Prime. The funding accompanies Hex 4.0, a from-scratch rewrite built for an 'agent native' era, replacing the original 2020-2021 architecture. Hex says the new version treats everything as plain code rather than a proprietary YAML format, aiming to give teams context, controls, and guardrails as data work spreads into tools like Cursor and Claude. Hex has over 2,500 customers globally.

## Questions this post answers

### How much funding did Hex raise and at what valuation?

Hex closed a $100 million financing round at a $1.2 billion valuation. The round was led by PeakXV and 137 Ventures, with participation from Amplify, Avra, a16z, Redpoint, Sequoia, and Zero Prime. The capital is intended to scale Hex's team, expand go-to-market efforts, and fund development of Hex 4.0, a rewritten version of its data analytics platform built around code and AI agents.

### Why did Hex rebuild its data platform from scratch instead of bolting AI onto the existing product?

Hex's original architecture, built in 2020 to 2021, was not 'agent native' and its AI agent harness had become bloated with hundreds of tools needed to teach agents to work outside their normal patterns. Its compute engine also wasn't designed for the high-speed, high-concurrency, iterative workflows agents require, pushing the team toward a full rewrite called Hex 4.0 rooted in plain code rather than a proprietary format.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 87 comments across hackernews (as of 2026-10-28).

**TL;DR:** Reaction is dominated by mockery of the new landing page's broken, over-designed look, alongside a real debate about whether AI agents and tools like Claude/Marimo are making BI platforms like Hex obsolete; some long-time users still vouch for the product itself.

**Sentiment:** 20% positive · 30% mixed · 50% skeptical

**The case for**

- Some heavy users say the Hex agent has effectively replaced traditional BI/reporting tools and let a tiny data team cover a lot of ground.
- A few commenters report smooth onboarding and strong team satisfaction after recently adopting it.
- One commenter called the new design interesting, framing it as an intentional 'AI slop' aesthetic rather than low-effort output.

**The pushback**

- Many found the redesigned landing page visually broken (overlapping boxes, cut-off text, scroll hijacking) across different browsers.
- Several argue the raise and rewrite reflect empty buzzword-driven marketing ('agent-native', 'trust and govern') rather than substance.
- Commenters question whether a BI company needs $100M, and whether AI copilots (Claude+skills, Marimo, Metabase) make dedicated BI platforms like Hex redundant.
- Some see this as part of a broader trend of inflated valuations for companies with little differentiated value.
- One former fan says Hex's recent AI push made outputs harder to maintain and added unnecessary complexity.

**By community**

- hackernews (mixed): A lot of pile-on criticism of the redesigned website's bugs and buzzwordy copy sits alongside genuine testimonials from users who find the product and its AI agent genuinely valuable.

**Hottest debate:** Whether AI agents and coding assistants (Claude+skills, Marimo, Metabase) are making dedicated BI tools like Hex obsolete, versus users saying Hex's agent is itself what makes it indispensable.

**Open questions**

- Will AI eventually let companies build their own analytics tooling in-house, eliminating the need for platforms like Hex?
- What exactly justifies a $100M raise and $1.2B valuation for a BI company at this stage?
- Is the much-mocked landing page a real signal of product quality, or just a cosmetic misstep unrelated to the core software?

**Highlights**

> Half of the boxes overlap at least on Safari, it's actually just broken. The Show NexaCorp Q3 sales box, Slack box and Hex CLI box is half cut off on the right so you can't click the Codex tab, then scrolling down the "vability" which I assume is observability is cut off to the left, and the "adiness" box overlaps "Flexible by design” which I guess fair enough lol. Worst of all they committed the cardinal sin of hijacking scrolling. Please for the love of god do not hijack scrolling.

> I liked Hex. I introduced it to my company and now it has become the main BI tool. However, since they started pushing the whole AI thing I no longer like them. It may speed up doing analytics, but makes everything hard to maintain, creates a ton of duplication and adds yet another layer to take care of. I also think AI may come back to bite them in the ass. What's the point of an analytics platform is you can create dashboards from scratch directly using AI. What are they adding to the table? They should have stuck to just making developers lives easier instead of that weird objective that is trying to make analytics accessible for everyone

> We are heavy Hex users at OpenRouter. I was skeptical that it would replace "core" reporting tools like Looker, but the efficacy of the Hex agent has made it our go-to for just about all of our analytics, and allowed us to get incredibly far with a single (very good) person on the data team. We can make completely reproducible reporting when we need it (for e.g. our weekly business reviews), while the agent can answer all of the ad-hoc stuff that would normally be done by a small army of analysts scurrying around.

> I think the hardest thing for me is all these sites and services coming out with phrases like: “Trust and govern every answer” or “Bring BI to where people work” or “self-serve in plain language” or “Trust and control behind every answer” I’m like, what the f*k. We’re busy doing this shit for a little-hundred-mil? Do we REALLY need these little guide notebooks? Everyone has AI just, I dunno, stuff the shit in SQLite and generate a graph. One more thing: how many f*king insights do companies need? This shit is like analysis paralysis. Keep it simple people, don’t pay for this crap. If you need to gather all your little magical documents, maybe it’s time to consider cleaning out the attic instead.

> This is getting crazy and is another feather in the cap of unhinged American investing and business culture right now. My first question, what does a BI company need $100M for? Why does it seem that Figma’s logo is on every company’s trust badge list. Do they spend millions on SaaS subscriptions? Or are they getting bamboozled into getting their name hijacked for trust? Is this just me or do other people feel this is getting out of hand?
