# Homebridge and Pi-hole on a Raspberry Pi 4

**[RUBYLAND](https://daily.dev/sources/rubyla)** · 9 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A Raspberry Pi 4 that seemed dead turned out to have a corrupt bootloader EEPROM, fixed by flashing a bootloader SD card in Raspberry Pi Imager. The revived Pi now runs Homebridge to bring ProWarm underfloor heating thermostats and Samsung TVs into Apple Home, plus Pi-hole to block ads for the whole house. Thermostat schedules stay on the thermostat itself rather than in the Home app, since two schedules fight each other and a Home app schedule needs the Pi, Wi-Fi and the cloud all working. Pi-hole's admin dashboard was moved to port 8080 because Homebridge's nginx already used port 80. The setup was later cloned onto a USB SSD in an Argon ONE case, since SD cards wear out from Pi-hole's constant logging.

## Questions this post answers

### My Raspberry Pi 4 won't display anything on HDMI even though the light is on, is it dead?

Not necessarily; a blank HDMI screen with the power light on can indicate a corrupt bootloader EEPROM, which is reportedly common on Pi 4 boards. Recovery involves using Raspberry Pi Imager to write a bootloader recovery image (Misc utility images, Bootloader for Pi 4 family, SD Card Boot) to a new SD card, booting from it, and waiting about 10 seconds for the screen to turn green.

### Why does my Pi-hole admin dashboard not load when I visit the admin URL on a Raspberry Pi running Homebridge?

The Homebridge Raspberry Pi image runs nginx on port 80, so it intercepts requests meant for Pi-hole's web admin page even though Pi-hole's DNS function still works fine. The fix is moving Pi-hole's web server to another port, for example port 8080, with 'sudo pihole-FTL --config webserver.port "8080o,[::]:8080o"' followed by restarting the pihole-FTL service.

### Should I control my smart thermostat's heating schedule from Apple Home or from the thermostat itself?

Keep schedules on the thermostat, not in the Home app. A Home app schedule depends on a home hub, a Homebridge Pi, Wi-Fi, and Tuya's cloud all working simultaneously, while the thermostat's own schedule runs with no network at all. Running schedules in both places also causes them to repeatedly undo each other, and underfloor heating's slow warm-up relies on the thermostat's own learning mode.
