# How AI Agents Are Changing API Architecture

**[Nordic APIs](https://daily.dev/sources/nordicapis)** · 8 min read · 24 upvotes · 4 comments

## Summary

Autonomous AI agents are reshaping API consumption patterns, prompting API providers to rethink identity, authorization, security, design, and observability. Key concerns include agents making excessive or unauthorized API calls, privilege creep from long-lived tokens, prompt injection attacks via indirect data, and the need for just-in-time authorization and zero standing privilege. API design should favor machine-readable documentation, consistent schemas, and deterministic workflows, while observability tools need to track agent identity, delegated authority, and chained workflows beyond traditional latency and uptime metrics.

## Questions this post answers

### How much can reducing unnecessary API calls from AI agents save without hurting accuracy?

Research behind the When2Tool project found that agentic tools could cut their API calls by 20-56% without any reduction in accuracy, indicating that agents often call APIs more than necessary. This matters financially when agents interact with paid APIs, since every extra unneeded call adds direct cost without improving results.

_Developers tuning agent efficiency can follow API cost and performance findings like this on daily.dev._

### What security risks does OWASP flag as most relevant to AI agents calling APIs?

OWASP's Top 10 Risks for LLMs and GenAI lists prompt injection and excessive agency as major concerns for agentic API access. Prompt injection can arrive indirectly through external data, for example hidden instructions embedded in a support message telling an agent to forward a session token to an attacker's email.

_Teams securing agent-facing APIs can track emerging prompt injection defenses on daily.dev._

### Why is zero standing privilege recommended for AI agents accessing APIs instead of long-lived tokens?

Long-lived tokens with broad privileges are convenient but risky, since permissions tend to accumulate over time without old ones being removed, causing role drift and privilege creep. Zero standing privilege combined with just-in-time authorization limits an agent's access to only what it needs at the moment of a specific task, reducing the blast radius of over-permissioned agents.

> the privilege creep problem is basically solved already in theory, short lived scoped tokens plus OAuth token exchange for delegation. the gap is almost nobody's API gateway actually issues per-request scoped tokens for agents yet, everyone's still handing out long lived API keys and hoping.
