# How Artemis II livestreamed hi-def videos and images from the moon to Earth

## Summary

The Orion Artemis II Optical Communications System (O2O), developed by MIT Lincoln Laboratory and NASA Goddard, enabled the first laser communications link on a crewed mission beyond low Earth orbit. During the April 2026 Artemis II lunar flyby, O2O downlinked nearly half a terabyte of data at speeds up to 260 Mbps — comparable to home internet — transmitting HD video and high-res images of the moon and Earth over 250,000 miles. Based on MIT Lincoln Lab's MAScOT optical terminal, the system used infrared laser light, which carries 10–100x more data per second than radio waves. Mission operators found O2O so valuable they maximized its use beyond the originally scheduled one-hour daily window. Engineers believe future improvements could increase downlink capacity by at least 10x, and the team is now evaluating lasercom support for future lunar missions including NASA's Ignition initiative for a permanent lunar base.
