# How can you get the max of a collection? Cracking the Java Coding Interview #javacoding #javatips

## Summary

Two main patterns exist for finding the max element in a Java collection: Collections.max() and the Streams API. Collections.max() is a straightforward factory method requiring a comparator, but throws NullPointerException for null elements and NoSuchElementException for empty collections. The stream approach using stream().max() returns an Optional, which handles empty collections more gracefully, but incurs the overhead of stream creation. Unless stream-specific features are needed, Collections.max() is generally the better choice.
