# How I Stay Engaged in AI Agentic Development

**[Atomic Spin](https://daily.dev/sources/atomicobject)** · 11 min read · 22 upvotes · 7 comments

## Summary

A developer reflects on three years of using AI coding agents and shares personal strategies to stay engaged and avoid cognitive atrophy: talking through architecture decisions with coworkers instead of only the agent, sketching diagrams to build a mental model before coding, manually verifying and testing agent-produced code rather than trusting it blindly, learning where models tend to fail (data flow, architecture, following existing patterns, scope size), keeping PRs small and work well-scoped to avoid orchestration burnout, and deliberately testing her own skills against the agent (racing to find files, forming bug hypotheses before letting the agent investigate, occasionally hand-writing code, and getting second opinions from different model families).

> 15+ years here. My love and enjoyment of code isn't diminished at all, and in fact, quite the opposite. You don't _need_ to be a "loop engineer" or "never look at the code" whatever these ridiculous claims and terms circulating around social media are.

My love and enjoyment of code isn’t diminished at all, and in fact, quite the opposite. You don’t need to be a “loop engineer” or “never look at the code” whatever these ridiculous claims and terms circulating around social media are.\nYou can genuinely leverage these tools as a boon to soak up some of the parts of the work that were never that fun:\n\nBoilerplate sucks, and if you’ve written it millions of times…now you don’t have to.\nRefactors & migrations can be arduous and time consuming…now you have one of the most flexible and powerful data processing tools ever created.\nDebugging obtuse errors could have had you wasting hours on Google and S.O…now you have a deep search engine that can digest your exact context.\nLearning new languages and stacks can be intimidating…now you have a dynamic tutorial generator and interactive documentation chatbot to work through nuances and concepts with through Socratic methods.\n\nI really am advocating for developers to look at them as a Delegation Layer. They’re systems that sit right alongside your stack, and at this point, at every level in it, like a connective tissue that intersects at all points. I can delegate a spec, a function, a file, a whole feature set, an app, a debugging loop, etc… My day-to-day isn’t all that different, it’s just like having the “Ship’s Computer” that I can ping anytime I need something. I’m enjoying the benefits that a “smart” data processing pattern interpolator provides, but I’m not giving up any personal control or agency. My goal isn’t to go faster, nor is it to avoid coding, because coding isn’t drudgery or “below us” just because we have new code generation tools. It is a unique intersection of logic, math, problem-solving, critical thinking, planning, communication, and creativity.\nI can go on, but really, if you get creative, you can retain your attachment and love of coding and problem solving while still benefitting from some amazing advances in coding assistants.","datePublished":"2026-08-17T14:34:08.370Z","url":"https://daily.dev/posts/NV2vKw86m#c-I8NEYKaCN","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Lars Faye | Confident Coding","url":"https://daily.dev/confidentcoding","image":"https://media.daily.dev/image/upload/s--OGZu5DEc--/f_auto/v1772569630/avatars/avatar_umWZ9aQAng34qk5aaJl2q?_a=BAMAMiiu0"},"interactionStatistic":{"@type":"InteractionCounter","interactionType":{"@type":"LikeAction"},"userInteractionCount":13}},{"@type":"Comment","text":"“three years of using AI coding agents”\nwasn’t agentic coding effectively coined like 2 years ago?","datePublished":"2026-08-19T13:22:14.456Z","dateModified":"2026-08-19T14:00:31.269Z","url":"https://daily.dev/posts/NV2vKw86m#c-j0w6IJxOx","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"PickledMango","url":"https://daily.dev/pickledmango","image":"https://media.daily.dev/image/upload/s--u6UKc2fb--/f_auto/v1750171331/avatars/avatar_q9GwLFdlHHSfHqxMLYo18?_a=BAMClqUq0"},"interactionStatistic":{"@type":"InteractionCounter","interactionType":{"@type":"LikeAction"},"userInteractionCount":4}},{"@type":"Comment","text":"Probably started dreaming about for the 1st year.","datePublished":"2026-08-21T13:40:29.128Z","url":"https://daily.dev/posts/NV2vKw86m#c-F6SFckr0C","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Gökhan Yesilyayla","url":"https://daily.dev/telli","image":"https://media.daily.dev/image/upload/s--uvOVZKth--/f_auto/v1747040086/avatars/avatar_8OZxUEpFYzWHRGdCLpAZa?_a=BAMClqUq0"},"interactionStatistic":{"@type":"InteractionCounter","interactionType":{"@type":"LikeAction"},"userInteractionCount":1}},{"@type":"Comment","text":"Open agent PRs should stay under three","datePublished":"2026-08-18T02:43:08.072Z","url":"https://daily.dev/posts/NV2vKw86m#c-gbGJY5NHu","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Agustin Barrientos","url":"https://daily.dev/agustinbarrientos","image":"https://media.daily.dev/image/upload/s--5ayxQnqn--/f_auto/v1788281802/avatars/avatar_wQYYVe5Tbj0NJ7C7qPoa8?_a=BAMAMicg0"},"interactionStatistic":{"@type":"InteractionCounter","interactionType":{"@type":"LikeAction"},"userInteractionCount":1}}]}
