# How many of your agent's calls actually need a frontier model?

**[LangChain](https://daily.dev/sources/langchain)** · 12 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

NVIDIA NeMo Switchyard is an open source model routing library that automatically selects between cheap and frontier LLMs per agent turn. A benchmark of 145 multi-step agentic tasks (averaging 6.3 model calls each) found that only 7% of turns required a frontier model (Claude Opus 4.8), while a 30B parameter model (Nemotron 3.5 Lightning) handled the other 93%. Routing cut total cost by 74% compared to running Opus alone, at the expense of about 6 accuracy points. A cost-break-even formula is provided: minimum offload = judge cost / (expensive cost - cheap cost). If the two models are close in price, routing cannot pay unless the cheap model is self-hosted. The judge model consumed 21.2% of routed spend and is identified as the highest-leverage optimization target. Routing is not recommended for latency-sensitive workloads or short single-turn tasks.

## Questions this post answers

### What percentage of agent turns actually need a frontier model according to real benchmark data?

In a benchmark of 145 multi-step agentic tasks averaging 6.3 model calls each, only 7% of turns required a frontier model. A 30B parameter model handled the remaining 93%. Despite handling just 7% of calls, the frontier model (Claude Opus 4.8) accounted for 68.4% of total spend, while the cheaper model (Nemotron 3.5 Lightning) handled 93% of calls for only 10.4% of cost.

### How do I calculate whether LLM routing is worth the cost for my agent workload?

Use this formula: minimum offload = judge cost / (expensive model cost - cheap model cost). The judge runs on every turn until a task escalates, so the price gap between models must be wide enough to cover it. If the two models are close in price, the formula may require offloading more than 100% of turns, making routing unprofitable unless you self-host the cheap model to bring its inference cost near zero.

### What are the limitations of using NVIDIA NeMo Switchyard LLM classifier in escalation mode?

Escalation mode adds roughly 700ms latency per turn because the judge model runs as a second call on each turn until a task escalates. It also requires multi-turn trajectories to function — short or single-turn workloads give the escalation logic nothing to read. The judge model itself consumed 21.2% of total routed spend in benchmarks, making it the second largest cost line item after the frontier model.
