# How Mozilla lost the Internet (& what's next)

**[Community Picks](https://daily.dev/sources/community)** · 14 min read · 30 upvotes · 10 comments

## Summary

Mozilla's new CEO, Laura Chambers, is steering the company towards digital advertising to diversify revenue streams, given their heavy reliance on Google's search engine deal. Despite stable revenue, a recent antitrust ruling against Google poses a significant threat to Mozilla's financial health. Traditional strategies like donations and subscriptions have fallen short, leading to this new direction, which may alienate their core privacy-focused users.

> Mozilla didn’t disappear from the internet—it just got swamped by Chrome-based browsers. With uBlock Origin, Firefox is still one of the safest ways to browse

> Firefox was the first choice for many in the past, but Mozilla's strategy to differentiate it with features from the rest of the browser by adding themes, and all the other garbage.

> This made Firefox slow and clunky and Google's Chrome seized the opportunity. The first versions of Chrome obsessed over performance and making a slim UI and it worked, it made people switch to Chrome overnight (Most people don't remember, but initially Chrome was like loading websites 30% faster than Firefox. Still, to this day Chrome feels more performant too).

> Firefox is still my main browser, but for the last 3 month I have been using brave just for their search AI search engine, it can be used on Firefox too, since I tried that on Midori, but can not be set as default search engine, if that becomes possible, Will definitely drop Brave as it uses too much resources.

> IMO, Brave AI search engine is better than DuckDuckGo at the moment.
>
> Firefox will always be my main browser until they completely vanish.

> Mozilla has done many foolish things on their way down: taking Firefox for granted and not sufficiently investing in it, purging Eich (the creator of Javascript) who went off to create the Brave browser, breaking their browser to try to censor a browser extension they didn't like, etc.
