# How much energy do data centers and artificial intelligence use?

**[Hacker News](https://daily.dev/sources/hn)** · 11 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Data centers consumed around 485 TWh in 2025, roughly 1.5% of global electricity, with AI-focused facilities accounting for about a third of that (0.5% of global electricity). While the global share seems modest, demand is highly geographically concentrated — Ireland uses over 20% of its electricity on data centers, and Virginia over 25%. Individual LLM queries consume roughly 0.24–0.34 Wh for simple text, rising to ~50 Wh for agentic reasoning tasks, which is still small compared to average daily personal electricity use. Future demand projections are highly uncertain, but the IEA's base case sees data centers reaching 3% of global electricity by 2030. The carbon impact depends heavily on how clean the supplying grids are, not just total consumption.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 3 discussions and 79 comments across hackernews (as of 2026-07-23).

**TL;DR:** The HN community finds AI data center energy consumption notable but not uniquely alarming, with most debate centering on whether 2% of US electricity for AI is 'massive,' how to fairly compare it to other uses, and whether corporations should bear the externality costs rather than growth being blocked outright.

**Sentiment:** 20% positive · 55% mixed · 25% skeptical

**The case for**

- Solar power production growth already exceeds AI data center electricity demand, suggesting supply-side solutions are feasible.
- Data centers' water usage is frequently overstated in public discourse and is far smaller than agricultural consumption.
- AI's energy footprint grew to 2% in ~2.5 years vs. 25 years for all other data center workloads, suggesting high efficiency of adoption relative to impact.
- Commenters support a nuanced pro-growth approach requiring corporations to internalize externality costs rather than blanket opposition.

**The pushback**

- Agentic AI queries (multi-step, multi-tool) are largely absent from current energy estimates and could dramatically increase real-world consumption.
- AI data center energy use is growing at an order-of-magnitude faster rate than traditional workloads, raising concerns about trajectory.
- Mega-corporations have strong financial incentives and lobbying power to avoid paying for negative externalities, undermining regulatory solutions.
- Public discourse is polarized between unchecked corporate expansion and NIMBY opposition, crowding out nuanced middle-ground policy.

**By community**

- hackernews (mixed): Commenters broadly accept that AI energy use is significant but contested whether it is disproportionate, with lively debate over externalities, agentic query costs, water usage accuracy, and the political economy of data center siting.

**Hottest debate:** Whether AI's ~2% share of US electricity is 'massive' given its current user base, and how to fairly compare it to other data center and societal energy uses.

**Open questions**

- How should energy estimates account for the rapidly growing use of long-running agentic AI queries?
- Who exactly is driving the 2% AI electricity figure — training vs. inference, and which companies/users?
- How can democracies implement nuanced regulation that forces corporations to internalize externalities without blocking beneficial growth?
- Will rapidly expanding solar production keep pace with AI energy demand growth?

**Highlights**

> >I think it’s massive. So what about the other 3%? That's not "massive"? Or it gets a pass because it's not AI? The whole debate over datacenter resource consumption feels like a rorschach test. Either you think the technology is transformative and therefore the resource consumption is justified, or you think it's slop and therefore any resource consumption can't be justified.

> > For longer queries or requests that rely on AI agents or reasoning, the footprint is higher. Epoch AI estimated that a long query (7,500 words of input) could consume about 2.5 Wh, and a very long one (75,000 words) could consume 40 Wh. Those are far higher than the simple text query. One thing that's missing from almost all of these energy estimates is the impact of "agentic" queries, which were rare a year ago and increasingly common today. I've asked questions of GPT-5.6 Pro that take 19 minutes to return an answer, as the model runs hundreds of search and site navigation tool calls (and a bit of executed Python code too) trying to get to a credible answer. I'm confident that 19 minutes involves a lot more than 75,000 words worth of tokens. With coding agents we can at least get an accurate token count. I'm already at 204,000 tokens of GPT-5.6 Sol today and I haven't started work yet.

> I'm dismayed by the current political discourse on this topic. Seems like the two camps are 1) let mega corps build data centers with impunity or 2) use NIMBY tactics to oppose them in all cases. I want to see a pro-growth approach that makes the mega corps assume the costs of their negative externalities. I want to see an increased build out of renewable and nuclear energy sources. I want to see environmental protections in place to limit impacts on aquifers and other water sources. Democracies don't handle nuance well.

> Remarkably, it took non-AI workloads 25 years to grow from zero to 3%, and it took AI only ~ 2.5 years to get to 2%. This puts a number to my intuitive feeling that things move an order of magnitude faster this time.

> Traditionally they have been. Several data centres in London are colocated in office buildings for example. I used to manage servers in one that most tenants wouldn't even have known about. AI focused data centres also could, but require a higher amount of power and cooling per rack, so it's less practical. The point is not that they don't use more than a typical office, but that they don't use the world-ending amounts people assume they use. The operators should still be made to pay for the externalities, and regulated to ensure they don't make life miserable for people around them. But that doesn't mean we need to stop building them.
