# How React Native Screens powers Expo Router?

**[Software Mansion](https://daily.dev/sources/swmansion)** · 6 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Expo Router uses React Navigation under the hood, which in turn relies on react-native-screens to deliver native navigation on iOS and Android. React-native-screens provides OS-level view management via UINavigationController on iOS and FragmentManager on Android, giving Expo Router a native look and feel. A key performance benefit is memory optimization: inactive screens are unmounted from the view hierarchy while their state is preserved in the React tree, reducing memory usage from ~230MB to ~168MB in benchmarks. Expo Router also inherits familiar React Navigation props like headerTitle, headerShown, and presentation, making it easy to adopt for developers already familiar with React Navigation.
