# How routing keys isolate Kafka consumer tests on a shared broker

**[The New Stack](https://daily.dev/sources/newstack)** · 8 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Testing Kafka consumers on a shared broker is difficult because standard request-routing patterns break at the async hop. This post describes a routing-key pattern that isolates consumer test deployments without duplicating clusters or topics. Each test deployment gets an opaque routing key stamped into Kafka record headers by producers. Test consumers filter messages by matching their key, while the stable consumer handles untagged and unclaimed traffic. Each test consumer joins its own consumer group to avoid offset interference. A small in-cluster mapping service tracks which keys are active. The pattern enables many parallel test loops on one real cluster, each seeing real partitions and real traffic. Caveats include stale cache windows around deployment lifecycle events, ordering limitations across interleaved traffic, and cases where duplicated infrastructure is still warranted. An alternative approach using ephemeral topics with a resource plugin framework is also mentioned.
