At the time, Nvidia had about 30 days of cash left after its first chip, the NV1, failed when Microsoft standardized triangle-based graphics via DirectX. Huang asked Sega to convert a contract payment into equity, warning the money would likely be lost. Sega's board agreed, giving Nvidia six months to build the RIVA 128, a triangle-based GPU that sold a million units in four months and led to Nvidia's 1999 IPO. Sega later sold its stake for ~$15 million — a stake that would be worth roughly $1 trillion today.
