# How to Evaluate General-Purpose Robot Policies for Real-World Deployment

## Summary

Evaluating general-purpose robot policies rigorously is one of robotics' hardest unsolved problems. Current benchmarks suffer from visual domain overlap between training and evaluation, benchmark saturation from fixed task sets, lack of diagnostic insight beyond binary success/failure, and insufficient statistical rigor. NVIDIA Research introduces RoboLab, a simulation benchmarking platform designed to address these gaps. RoboLab supports robot-agnostic evaluations, rapid agentic task generation to prevent saturation, and a rich suite of metrics including graded task scores, trajectory quality (via SPARC), and execution speed. It also provides failure event logging and a dashboard for diagnosing exactly where and why policies fail. The platform tests robustness across language complexity (vague vs. specific instructions), scene complexity (distractors and clutter), and task horizon length. Key findings include that current models are brittle to instruction phrasing and struggle with long-horizon tasks beyond four complex subtasks. RoboLab-120, an initial benchmark of 120 curated tabletop tasks, tags each task by visual, procedural, and relational competencies. The platform powers NVIDIA Isaac Lab-Arena and is planned for productization in August 2026.
