How To Make Steel That Breathes

Breathable mold steel is a specialized material with interconnected micro-pores that allow gas to escape through the mold itself during injection molding, eliminating the need for traditional exhaust ports. It can be produced using selective laser melting (SLM) 3D printing by mixing a foaming agent like chromium nitride into metal powder. As the foaming agent decomposes during printing, it releases gas bubbles that create pores of 80 micrometers or less — small enough to block molten plastic but large enough to vent trapped air. Porosity can be tuned via foaming agent concentration and laser settings. Compared to older sintered ventilated steels like PM-35, SLM-produced breathable steel offers better mechanical properties and supports more complex geometries.
