WhatsApp has begun rolling out username reservations for its 3 billion users ahead of the feature's full launch. Once live, usernames will let people connect on WhatsApp without sharing their phone number. Users can reserve a username via Settings > Account > Username, and WhatsApp will suggest alternatives if a chosen name is taken. Existing Facebook or Instagram usernames can also be claimed. An optional four-digit username key adds an extra privacy layer, requiring contacts to enter the key before messaging for the first time. The feature is expected to go fully live within weeks.
