# How to Stop X (Twitter) from Using Your Data to Train Its Grok AI

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 2 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

X (formerly known as Twitter) has introduced a default setting that allows user posts to be used for training its new AI, Grok. This has raised privacy concerns, especially with the Irish Data Protection Commission questioning its compliance with GDPR laws. Users can opt-out by adjusting their privacy settings on the desktop site or by making their accounts private. Mobile users need to use the web version to make these changes.

# How to Disable Data Usage for Grok AI Training on X (formerly Twitter)

X (formerly known as Twitter) has recently implemented a default setting that allows the company to use users' posts for training its new conversational AI, Grok. This change, which integrates user data into the AI's training pool, has raised concerns among privacy watchdogs and users alike. Here’s what you need to know and how you can opt out of this setting.

## Default Data Usage for AI Training

Elon Musk’s company has activated this data-sharing setting by default, meaning that, unless users take action, their posts are automatically included in Grok AI's training data. The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), responsible for overseeing X’s compliance with EU GDPR laws, expressed surprise at this change and is currently awaiting a response from X regarding the legal grounds for this data processing. Similar practices are also being adopted by other social networks like Meta.

## How to Opt Out

If you're concerned about your data being used to train AI models and wish to disable this setting, follow these steps on the desktop site:

1. Navigate to **Settings and privacy**.
2. Click on **Privacy and safety**.
3. Find and select **Grok**.
4. Uncheck the box that permits the use of your data for AI training.

Alternatively, having a private account will also prevent your posts from being used in data training. Note that this feature is currently not available on mobile apps, so you will need to use the web version to make these changes.

## Privacy Policy Update

X updated its privacy policy in September 2023 to reflect these AI data usage practices. This change has sparked controversy, as it appears to violate user consent norms upheld by regulations like the EU Digital Services Act, drawing criticisms for employing so-called 'dark patterns' without explicit consent.

By following the above steps, you can ensure that your data remains private and is not used for training AI models on X.
