# Huawei CFO’s admissions can be used against the company, US judge rules

**[The Next Web](https://daily.dev/sources/tnw)** · 4 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A US federal judge in Brooklyn ruled that admissions made by Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou in her 2021 deferred-prosecution agreement are admissible as evidence in Huawei's upcoming criminal trial, set for September. Meng had signed a four-page statement of facts acknowledging she lied to a financial institution about Huawei's compliance with US sanctions and export-control law, in exchange for her personal case being dropped and her release from detention in Canada. Judge Ann Donnelly held that because Meng made the admissions in connection with her work for Huawei and the company continues to employ her as CFO, Huawei cannot distance itself from her words. The ruling means prosecutors can present a jury with an admission from Huawei's own senior executive that the company misled a bank about sanctions compliance — a significant evidentiary development in one of the most consequential US legal actions against the Chinese tech giant.
