The catch: the shader compiler's NIR-to-machine-code back-end cannot be open-sourced because Huawei's GPU ISA is proprietary, meaning the driver would require a closed binary blob to function. Red Hat's David Airlie responded that upstreaming under these conditions is very unlikely and suggested Huawei open up their GPU ISA instead, noting the blob could be reverse-engineered in the AI era. Without full open-sourcing, the driver is expected to remain a downstream, closed-source project.
