# Hugging Face is being acquired by NVIDIA for $12.93 billion

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 2 min read · 4 upvotes · 2 comments

## Summary

Hugging Face is being acquired by NVIDIA in a deal valued at $12.93 billion, a figure the team says has some hidden jokes baked in. Co-founder Clement Delangue says the deal emerged from talks with Jensen Huang about scaling open-source AI through more compute, support, and visibility. NVIDIA has committed to keeping the platform open, independent, and compute-agnostic, and the founding team is staying on. Co-founder Thomas Wolf says NVIDIA is the closest fit to Hugging Face's values around open weights, open science, robotics, and AI for science. Nothing changes for users immediately; the long-term goal is 100 million AI builders owning their own models rather than renting access.

## Content

Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, roughly three times the AI platform's last private valuation of $4.5 billion. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027, pending regulatory approval. About $11.9 billion goes to stockholders, with up to $1 billion set aside for employee retention.

Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue said he approached Jensen Huang directly, looking for more compute, infrastructure support, and visibility for open-source AI. Nvidia's answer was to buy the company outright. Delangue and the rest of the founding team are staying on.

The platform currently hosts 3 million models, 500,000 datasets, and 1 million applications, used by over 18 million developers and 200,000 companies. Nvidia is already the largest contributor of open models and data to the Hub, and the acquisition extends that relationship considerably. Nvidia says it will invest in Hugging Face's infrastructure, safety tooling, evaluations, inference, and deployment capabilities.

Both sides are emphatic that the platform stays open. Hugging Face will remain multi-cloud and multi-accelerator — no requirement to use Nvidia hardware. Developers can still choose their own models, frameworks, clouds, and chips.

Co-founder Thomas Wolf noted the oddly specific acquisition price of $12,930,300,000, saying there are hidden references to both Hugging Face and Nvidia in the number if you look for them. He also recalled a joke from co-founder Julien Chaumond years ago that "code will be a subset of ML" — which, he says, turned out to be true.

For Nvidia, the deal gives it a strong position in AI model distribution, evaluation, and deployment — areas where it previously had no direct foothold. The company has been quietly building its open-source presence through initiatives like the Nemotron Coalition, a group that includes Mistral AI, Perplexity, and Thinking Machines Lab. Owning the Hub is a significant step further up the stack.

Whether the platform's independence holds up under Nvidia ownership is the obvious question. For now, the commitments are clear on paper. The next few years will show whether they stick.

## Questions this post answers

### Is NVIDIA acquiring Hugging Face?

Yes, NVIDIA is acquiring Hugging Face in a deal valued at $12,930,300,000. Co-founder Clement Delangue says the deal followed conversations with Jensen Huang about what open-source AI needs to scale, including more compute, support, and visibility. NVIDIA has committed to keeping the Hugging Face platform open, independent, and compute agnostic, and the founding team is staying on.

### Will Hugging Face change for existing users after the NVIDIA acquisition?

Nothing changes for users immediately after the acquisition announcement. The stated long-term goal is to make open source the default way to build AI, targeting 100 million AI builders who own their models rather than renting access to someone else's, while NVIDIA keeps the platform open and compute agnostic.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 5 discussions and 135 comments across x (as of 2026-09-03).

**TL;DR:** Reaction is dominated by congratulatory noise (much of it spam, meme coins, and off-topic replies) toward Hugging Face staff, while a smaller thread of substantive replies debates whether Nvidia now controls the default distribution layer for open models and whether that compromises neutrality toward non-Nvidia hardware.

**Sentiment:** 45% positive · 40% mixed · 15% skeptical

**The case for**

- Some see the deal as strengthening open-source AI by giving the hub more resources while keeping it multi-cloud and multi-accelerator.
- One take frames it as capitalist self-interest aligning with a genuinely decentralized, open AI future.
- Faster innovation cycles are expected if open models continue to thrive under the new backing.

**The pushback**

- Concern that Nvidia effectively becomes the 'landlord' of the open AI ecosystem by owning the store where most open weights live.
- Worry that tooling on the platform could quietly nudge users toward Nvidia's own stack (e.g., TensorRT over ROCm), undermining claimed neutrality.
- Skepticism framed as irony: the company that sells the 'picks' now also owns the 'mine', raising doubts about whether open source truly benefits or just got acquired.

**By community**

- x (mixed): Overwhelmed by congratulatory replies, spam, and unrelated meme-coin chatter, with a smaller undercurrent of substantive debate about Nvidia's growing control over open-model distribution and hardware neutrality.

**Hottest debate:** Whether Nvidia's ownership of the platform threatens or reinforces the openness and hardware-neutrality of the AI model ecosystem.

**Open questions**

- Will the hub continue to treat non-Nvidia accelerators (like ROCm) neutrally as it scales under Nvidia ownership?
- If neutrality slips, would a competing fork of the platform emerge before the deal closes in 2027?

**Highlights**

> @rohanpaul_ai $12.93B for 18M devs is ~$718 a head. nvidia isn't buying revenue, it's buying the default download path. every from_pretrained call is a funnel. only question is neutrality, if the hub nudges TensorRT over ROCm a fork shows up before close in 2027

> @rohanpaul_ai Nvidia just bought the store where most of the open weights live, which basically makes them the landlord of the entire open AI ecosystem.

> @rohanpaul_ai Of the AI acquisitions this is the one I’m most bullish on. Nvidia wants a decentralized AI future which is good for them and good for humanity. An example where capitalist self interest helps everyone

> @omarsar0 NVIDIA buying the home of open source models is either the most ironic thing in AI or the most logical. Jensen sells you the pick and now owns the mine too. Genuinely can't tell if open source won or just got acquired.
> — [MarcusSpillane on x](https://x.com/MarcusSpillane/status/2095513595165511846)

> @omarsar0 tbh nvidia's been quietly shipping solid models for a while now. this just supercharges it. open weights are great, as long as the tooling around them doesn't quietly route you back to their gpus 🙂

> We'll all need to keep an eye on this. Hugging Face is important to the open weight model community, if Nividia even hints at meddling, an alternative will need to be found quickly. Open source AI is moving too fast to hesitate.
