# Hybrid Azure applications using OData

**[Maarten Balliauw](https://daily.dev/sources/maartenballiauw)** · 7 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A walkthrough shows how to expose an on-premise SQL Server database to a Windows Azure application without opening firewall ports, by wrapping the database in an OData feed built with WCF Data Services and relaying it through Windows Azure platform AppFabric Service Bus. Steps cover building a console-hosted WCF service, configuring webHttpRelayBinding and service bus credentials in App.config, writing the custom WebServiceHost, and consuming the resulting feed both via browser and from a .NET client. The post notes updates aren't supported out of the box and that full database access still requires alternatives like PortBridge.
