# Hybrid Microcontrollers Reshape Embedded Computing

## Summary

Hybrid microcontrollers (MCUs) are emerging as a new category that integrates multiple heterogeneous processing cores — real-time CPUs, application processors, NPUs/TPUs, DSPs, and cryptographic engines — on a single chip. Unlike traditional MCUs or MPUs, these devices distribute workloads across specialized hardware blocks, reducing latency, power consumption, and board complexity. Key drivers include the rise of edge AI, growing cybersecurity requirements, and the need for deterministic real-time control alongside high-throughput data processing. Application areas span automotive ECUs, industrial automation, medical wearables, energy systems, and industrial IoT gateways. Developers working with hybrid MCUs must adopt multicore software frameworks, edge AI toolchains, and inter-processor middleware to fully exploit the architecture.

> The author forgot one of the more successful hybrids: FPGA + a hard MPU/MCU (like Zynq series). Plus a philosophical question: is FPGA running soft-MCU/MPU a hybrid or not? A beefy portion of large-scale FPGA applications have some form of soft-CPU embedded.
