# HyperX Driver Coming For Linux 7.3 Just To Report A Microphone's Mute Status

**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 3 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A new HID-HyperX driver is being added to the Linux 7.3 kernel to fix a longstanding issue with the HyperX QuadCast 2 USB gaming microphone ($149). The microphone's tap-to-mute button is handled entirely in firmware, which gates audio internally but never sends the standard HID Telephony 'Phone Mute' usage event. As a result, Linux desktops and conferencing apps always show the mic as live even when muted. The 117-line C driver decodes the vendor-defined HID report (Report ID 0x77) and emits KEY_MICMUTE, making the mute button behave like any standard microphone mute key. The patch is now in the HID subsystem's for-next branch and will be merged for Linux 7.3.

## Questions this post answers

### Why does my HyperX QuadCast 2 microphone show as unmuted in Linux even when I tap the mute button?

The QuadCast 2's tap-to-mute button is handled entirely in device firmware, which silences audio internally but never sends the standard HID Telephony 'Phone Mute' usage (0x2f) or touches the UAC feature unit. Instead, mute state is reported via a vendor-defined HID collection (Report ID 0x77), which hid-input cannot map. A new kernel driver decoding this report and emitting KEY_MICMUTE is being added in Linux 7.3.

### What does the HID-HyperX driver added in Linux 7.3 actually do?

The HID-HyperX driver decodes a 64-byte vendor-defined HID report (Report ID 0x77) emitted by the HyperX QuadCast 2 when its mute button is pressed. Byte 1 identifies a mute event and byte 2 carries the resulting state (0x00 = unmuted, 0x01 = muted). The driver emits KEY_MICMUTE on each state change, making the button behave like any standard microphone mute key. The driver is 117 lines of C code.
