I bypassed Plex's remote streaming paywall with one free tool

Plex locked remote streaming behind a paywall in April 2025, requiring a Plex Pass or a $3/month Remote Watch Pass. A free workaround exists using Tailscale, a mesh VPN built on WireGuard. By running Tailscale on both the home server (e.g., a NAS) and a mobile device, the remote device appears to be on the local home network, bypassing Plex's remote access detection entirely. Tailscale also solves CGNAT issues by handling its own NAT traversal. The author notes Plex may be working to block this method, but it currently works and Tailscale remains useful for self-hosters regardless — enabling access to all self-hosted services without reverse proxies.
