# I compared my Claude Code workflow to a beginner's, and some of my habits were making things worse

**[XDA Developers](https://daily.dev/sources/xda-developers)** · 5 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A regular Claude Code user audits their own workflow against a beginner's leaner setup, discovering that many 'advanced' habits were counterproductive. Overloading MCP servers created tool-selection confusion and context bloat before Tool Search deferred tool definitions. Adding memory layers introduced stale context that had to be reconciled with the current repo state. Stuffing CLAUDE.md with every preference and edge case hurt instruction adherence, contrary to Anthropic's own guidance to keep it short. Using Plan mode for trivial two-minute tasks wasted an extra round of thinking without added benefit. The overall lesson: piling on every advanced tweak doesn't automatically improve results, and periodic auditing of a Claude Code setup helps strip out accumulated clutter.

## Questions this post answers

### Should I keep my CLAUDE.md file short or add every coding preference to it?

Keep CLAUDE.md files relatively short. Anthropic's own guidance recommends this because longer files consume more context and can actually hurt instruction adherence. Since CLAUDE.md content is loaded into every project context, bloating it with every preference, edge case, and past mistake has a direct and ongoing cost rather than a one-time cost.

### Does adding more MCP servers to Claude Code make it perform better?

No, adding more MCP servers does not automatically improve Claude Code's performance. Every connected server adds more tools Claude has to choose between, and when tool definitions overlap, tool selection becomes messier rather than more useful; before Tool Search deferred loading tool definitions until needed, excess MCP servers could also consume a large chunk of context before a prompt was even typed.

_Anyone wiring multiple MCP servers into a coding agent can track these tradeoffs on daily.dev._

### Is it worth using Claude Code's Plan mode for every task, even simple ones?

No, using Plan mode for very simple tasks wastes an extra round of thinking without meaningful benefit. Claude would outline a plan for something needing only a couple of edits, then make those same edits anyway, so Plan mode is better reserved for tasks where catching a bad approach before execution actually matters.
