A hands-on account of downgrading from Claude Pro to the free tier for a week after four months on the paid plan. The free tier retains Sonnet 4.6 with adaptive thinking, 200K context, Artifacts, and up to five Projects. The biggest practical pain points were losing access to Opus (notably for deeper research and pushback on answers), losing Claude Design, and the absence of a usage meter on the free plan. The usage cap itself was less of an issue than expected. The conclusion: free Claude is genuinely strong and ahead of free ChatGPT for most casual users, but Pro becomes worthwhile if you rely on Opus, Claude Design, or Claude Code daily.
