# I finally fixed my gigabit internet with a setting that made it slower on purpose

## Summary

Gigabit internet users often experience high latency and lag spikes despite fast speeds due to bufferbloat — a problem caused by hardware buffers overflowing during heavy traffic. Smart Queue Management (SQM) can fix this by intentionally capping bandwidth to 85-95% of your line rate, enabling fair queuing and active queue management to prevent buffer overflow. The trade-off is losing 5-10% of peak throughput in exchange for consistently low latency under load. Before enabling SQM, verify your router has sufficient CPU power, as the processing overhead is significant and ISP-provided routers often can't handle it at gigabit speeds. Use a bufferbloat test like Waveform to tune the bandwidth cap until you achieve an A+ latency grade.
