## Summary

A creator unboxes and assembles a modular Framework laptop that ships in pieces, including unusual CAMM2 memory modules, then installs Omarchy (Arch Linux) from a USB drive. After hitting a secure boot snag, they disable it and successfully install Omarchy in under 60 seconds, praising the laptop's speed, battery life, modularity, and hardware privacy switches.

## Questions this post answers

### Why won't my Framework laptop boot from a USB installer drive?

Framework laptops ship preconfigured with secure boot enabled, which can prevent a freshly flashed Linux installer USB drive from being recognized as bootable. Disabling secure boot in the firmware settings resolves the issue, after which the USB drive boots normally into the installer.

_Developers troubleshooting Linux boot issues on new hardware often compare fixes like this on daily.dev._

### What is CAMM2 RAM and how is it different from regular laptop RAM sticks?

CAMM2, or Compression Attached Memory Module, is a RAM format that lays flat against the motherboard using compression contacts instead of plugging into a traditional slot. It looks unfamiliar to anyone used to standard SO-DIMM sticks, since there's no slot to insert it into, only a flat mounting surface.

_Hardware tinkerers piecing together upgrade compatibility details like this can follow related coverage on daily.dev._

### How long does it take to install Omarchy Linux on a Framework laptop?

Omarchy, an Arch Linux based distribution, can be installed in under 60 seconds once the installer USB boots correctly. This was demonstrated live on a Framework laptop after resolving a secure boot related USB detection problem.

> This is the kind of project that is making Linux accessible with all the shallow eye-candy appeal and productivity tools a beginner would want when coming from Windows or Mac. It has straight-forward documentation, it has many tools other distros can use, given for free regardless of your opinions in life, and you can add and remove things as you please with a direct menu, without jumping through hoops or asking for permission.

But if this existed when I first started building my system with X11 and bspwm (which was a painful and slow process), I’d jump in right away.\nA note to complainers and critics\nOn what merits do you spit on this project that’s clearly a net positive to Linux?\n\nPeople complained this thing was not a distro, just dotfiles on top of Arch (almost every offshoot of Arch is, but this one isn’t exempt) because it didn’t have an installerThey made an ISO that installs in under 2 min and is ready to go. Installer has a clean an aesthetic look and feelTake EndeavourOS as an example: amazing distro, instead of everything being dotfiles, some of it are Qt apps that (surprise!) read and write to files on config directories (like every Linux system ever that doesn’t store things in sqlite)Omarchy chose to put things in easier-to-find-files, manipulate them with bash, and create migration scripts that keeps a paper trail of changes made\nPeople still complained it wasn’t a distro because it didn’t even have a package repoIt does now and is well maintained\nPeople complained it didn’t have firewall enabled (which Arch doesn’t by default)It does now and it is eloquently integrated with the system\nPeople complain a lot was generated with AIThey never hid it, it was even clearly stated during development and on the release videoMost of the tools generated this way are the tiniest things, easy to audit, and can be removed without ceremony\nPeople complain about DHH’s political and ideological opinionsBecause you have to be a leftist to join the club, or stay quiet while they continue to speak openly about their political and ideological opinions and censor dissent in their "communities"All the while Omarchy continues to be centered around technical merit and anyone is welcome to contribute regardless or their opinions\n\nThink about it\nWhat bigger middle finger to someone you dislike can it possibly be than to use their stuff for free to your own benefit and to your causes?\nIn the end, this project was made and given away for free.\nBut a certain section of the ideological spectrum really just cares about criticizing, vilifying, and censoring from the comfort of their sophisticated devices.","datePublished":"2026-08-24T16:20:54.421Z","url":"https://daily.dev/posts/2HLjEcSMM#c-TiHdoGSXb","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Isaac de Andrade","url":"https://daily.dev/andradei","image":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/2653546?v=4"},"interactionStatistic":{"@type":"InteractionCounter","interactionType":{"@type":"LikeAction"},"userInteractionCount":2}}]}
