# I held onto X11 longer than I should have, and switching to Wayland fixed these things I didn't know were broken

## Summary

A long-time X11 user shares their experience switching to Wayland after years of resistance. The main holdout was the Compiz cube desktop effect, which now works on KDE Plasma under Wayland. Beyond that nostalgic feature, the switch revealed real security improvements — X11's 32-bit buffer handles allow any app to potentially access another's graphics memory, a flaw that can't be patched without breaking compatibility. Wayland also eliminates screen tearing, and Nvidia support has improved significantly with the R555 driver line, removing the need for tools like optimus-manager or bumblebee. With GNOME and KDE both dropping X11 support, and Red Hat's maintenance winding down, the author concludes it's time for Linux desktop users to embrace Wayland.
