# I mapped every machine in my home lab with this free tool

## Summary

NetBox, an open-source IPAM and DCIM tool originally designed for enterprises, works surprisingly well for home lab documentation. It lets you record network stacks, physical devices, virtual machines (including CPU/memory/storage specs), and even power outlet usage. Devices can be grouped via Racks, and the tool integrates with automation workflows through REST and GraphQL APIs. Docker users can deploy it via a LinuxServer docker-compose file. The main drawback is that data entry is largely manual and the UI has a learning curve, though the NetBox Discovery plugin can help auto-map devices.
