I put my Steam library on my NAS, and it was both brilliant and stupid

An experiment storing a Steam game library on a NAS using iSCSI instead of SMB/NFS. SMB and NFS caused crashes and poor performance, but iSCSI delivered surprisingly playable results. Single-player games ran with minimal latency impact, while multiplayer titles showed slightly longer load times (roughly 3-4 seconds more than a local SSD) with occasional network hiccups. Load time benchmarks across four games show iSCSI on NAS SSD is competitive with local storage, making it a viable option for repurposing spare NAS drives for game storage.
