# I ran a NAS without ECC RAM and survived—here's what actually matters

## Summary

Running a NAS without ECC RAM is widely considered dangerous in homelab communities, but the reality is more nuanced. ECC RAM protects against bit flips that can cause silent data corruption in ZFS or Btrfs filesystems, but in practice, faulty RAM typically announces itself through crashes before corrupting an entire storage pool. Real-world data loss more commonly stems from failing drives, bad cables, aging power supplies, or unclean shutdowns rather than RAM errors. ECC is still the better choice when available and affordable, but non-ECC builds are not inherently doomed — a solid backup strategy is the most important safeguard regardless of RAM type.
