# I ran the same SSD for five years, and here's what actually killed performance

**[XDA Developers](https://daily.dev/sources/xda-developers)** · 3 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A five-year-old NVMe SSD showing sluggish performance is rarely dying — it's usually being throttled by fixable software and thermal issues. The main culprits are SLC cache exhaustion (caused by a nearly full drive), missed OS TRIM commands, and controller overheating. Practical fixes include checking drive health with CrystalDiskInfo, manually triggering TRIM via Windows' Optimize Drives utility, and monitoring controller temps with HWiNFO64 while benchmarking. If temps exceed 75°C, reseating the M.2 heatsink or replacing a dried thermal pad can restore speeds. Physical flash wear is rarely the issue if TBW health remains above 80%.
