An analysis of 50 promotion cases at tech companies reveals that junior developers who got promoted quickly shared one trait: understanding how all parts of a system connect, not just their own code. Promoted juniors could trace bugs from UI through API to database, understood HTTP protocols, authentication flows, Linux basics, and deployment — enabling them to solve problems independently without waiting for others.

And the more bugs a developer debugs from different parts other than his/her own domain is invaluable experience in itself.

And understanding the domain you work on! Understanding why we are creating this functionality, instead of just adding yet another button, with some logic behind it.

Happened to me last month. Spent 3 days stuck on a “frontend bug” that was actually a missing index in Postgres. Once I traced it through the API to DB, fixed it in 10 mins. Never going back to guessing.
