# I stopped ignoring my PCIe x1 slot, and a $30 NIC card fixed my home lab's network bottleneck

**[XDA Developers](https://daily.dev/sources/xda-developers)** · 5 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A cheap $30 2.5 GbE NIC installed in an unused PCIe x1 slot eliminated a gigabit networking bottleneck in a home lab. The upgrade only paid off because the rest of the network (switch, router, other devices) already supported 2.5 GbE. PCIe 3.0 x1 offers far more bandwidth (~985 MB/s) than a 2.5 GbE NIC needs, so the slot is not a limiting factor. The faster NIC lets a two-drive ZFS mirror NAS actually approach its real read speeds (~280-295 MB/s vs ~110-115 MB/s on gigabit), speeding up large file transfers and Immich library pulls. A second NIC also enables traffic separation, redundancy, or using the lab as a router/firewall.

## Questions this post answers

### Is a PCIe 3.0 x1 slot fast enough for a 2.5 GbE network card?

Yes, a PCIe 3.0 x1 connection provides roughly 985 MB/s of theoretical bandwidth per direction after overhead, while a 2.5 GbE NIC only needs about a third of that in a best-case scenario. Even running at PCIe 2.0 speeds, the NIC would use just over half of the available bandwidth, so the x1 slot is not a bottleneck.

### How much faster is a 2.5 GbE NIC than gigabit for NAS file transfers?

A 1 GbE NIC tops out around 125 MB/s theoretically, with real-world transfers closer to 110-115 MB/s, while a 2.5 GbE NIC can handle roughly 280-295 MB/s. This lets a NAS running a two-drive ZFS mirror, capable of over 300 MB/s aggregate read speed, actually approach its real storage throughput instead of being capped by the network link.
