Old Android phones can be repurposed as lightweight home servers instead of discarded. Using Termux, you can install Jellyfin to create a media server, or set up Tailscale to create a private VPN exit node for secure remote access to your home network. The setup is straightforward but comes with real limitations: phones weren't designed for 24/7 operation, battery degradation is a concern, and Android support for self-hosting tools is often less polished than Linux alternatives. Best treated as a low-stakes experiment rather than a NAS replacement.
