# I tested every game in my Steam library on Linux, and the results shocked me

**[XDA Developers](https://daily.dev/sources/xda-developers)** · 3 min read · 32 upvotes · 10 comments

## Summary

A CachyOS user tested every game in their Steam library on Linux and found over 90% ran flawlessly, mostly via Proton, which combines DXVK/VKD3D-Proton for Direct3D-to-Vulkan translation with Wine for Win32 support. Native Linux ports are becoming less common as Proton compatibility improves, though roughly eleven live-service competitive shooters fail due to anti-cheat restrictions. Performance tuning on titles like Counter-Strike 2 can still be inconsistent compared to Windows, prompting the author to keep a Windows drive for select games.

## Questions this post answers

### Why do some competitive shooters with anti-cheat still not work on Linux even with Proton?

Many live-service competitive shooters rely on kernel-level anti-cheat systems that are not designed to work with Proton's Wine-based compatibility layer, causing roughly eleven such games to fail. However, not all anti-cheat-protected games are blocked; titles like Halo Infinite, DayZ, Hell Let Loose, Insurgency: Sandstorm, and BattleBit all run flawlessly on Linux.

_daily.dev surfaces ongoing coverage of anti-cheat and Proton compatibility for gamers weighing a Linux switch._

### What technologies let Windows-only games run on Linux through Steam Proton?

Proton combines DXVK and VKD3D-Proton to translate Direct3D calls into Vulkan, while Wine handles the Win32 API layer, letting unmodified Windows games run on Linux. Steam also pre-caches shaders so the first launch avoids stuttering, though skipping shader precompilation works fine for some games, such as Counter-Strike 2.

> It's not even about steam itself. It always about the big companies gonna support linux or not. It goes the the HQ and the HQ see there is no good getting profit about creating adaptibility at linux. So they are looking more likely "not worth it.". Beacuse money talks.
