# I thought Blu-rays and DVDs were obsolete until I discovered how long they can preserve data

Optical discs like Blu-rays and DVDs are often dismissed as obsolete, but they can last decades when stored properly. M-Disc technology, which uses a carbon-based recording layer that resists oxidation and decay, is rated for up to 1,000 years of data preservation. Unlike SSDs, HDDs, or cloud services — all of which require active maintenance, power, or subscriptions — a properly stored disc sits passively on a shelf indefinitely. This challenges the assumption that newer storage is always better, especially for long-term archival needs.
