A hobbyist experiment turning a Raspberry Pi 5 into a portable NAS powered by a cheap power bank. After ruling out TrueNAS (ARM port too complex, ZFS too memory-hungry) and hard drives (insufficient power), the author settled on OpenMediaVault running on Raspberry Pi OS with dual SSDs formatted as Btrfs pools and SMB shares. The setup connects via a smartphone hotspot and works reasonably well despite 1G Ethernet speed limitations.
