# I used an old graphics card to add AI features to my Immich server, and it's now smarter than Google Photos

## Summary

A hands-on account of adding GPU-accelerated AI features to a self-hosted Immich photo server using an old GTX 1080. The setup enables Smart Search via a CLIP model, visual duplicate detection, facial recognition with age calculation, and OCR using PP-OCRv5. The GPU is passed through to an LXC container on Proxmox, with manual NVIDIA driver installation required for the legacy Pascal card. The result is a privacy-preserving alternative to Google Photos with comparable or better AI-powered organization features, though Immich also works well in CPU-only mode.
