# I Was So Angry, I Built My Own

**[Community Picks](https://daily.dev/sources/community)** · 4 min read · 423 upvotes · 30 comments

## Summary

A developer built a custom project management system after frustration with existing tools. The solution features markdown-based documentation, multi-dimensional estimation using Value/Penalty/Effort/Risk metrics instead of story points, integrated Architecture Decision Records and Post-Mortems, automated DORA metrics tracking from production deployments, and enhanced Kanban boards with built-in cycle time measurement. The system leverages large context window AI models for generating documentation and maintaining consistency across components.

> Love this! I had a similar case recently. I was so mad someone wanted 5$ a month for a simple color palette generator, that I've created my own, enhanced it and am preparing to put it open source very soon.

> This has been becoming a problem for quite some time now. In an attempt to make EVERYHING, even the simplest of apps, reoccurring revenue, everything is subscription based.
>
> Most people want developers to make money on their apps, But, for the most part, if it is a simple stand along app without ongoing cost, it should not be subscription based.
>
> That also applies to making the apps web based (ongoing cost) when they would run better as a local installed app.

> After seven years with PKM, and everything else, I am back to Google Docs and Office. Knowing how to project (in my case, relearning) management with document processors is the key to a sustainable future. At scale, working only with files seems more sustainable than with notes or information sets.
