IBM has completed its acquisition of HRL Laboratories, gaining expertise in silicon-spin qubits, quantum sensing, materials, cryogenics, control electronics and interconnect technologies. HRL's silicon-spin work is expected to complement IBM's superconducting quantum computing efforts and support its hardware roadmap, including the fault-tolerant Starling system targeted for 2029 and the later Blue Jay system planned for the mid-2030s. Boeing and General Motors, HRL's former owners, will continue partnering with IBM and HRL on quantum applications. Financial terms were not disclosed.
