# Injectable Outlet in the Body Powers Bioelectric Implants

**[IEEE Spectrum](https://daily.dev/sources/ieeespectrum)** · 4 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Researchers at UC Irvine have developed an injectable bioelectric outlet — a soft, porous implant that allows a needle to temporarily connect with implanted devices for recharging and data transfer. Made from conductive polymer-coated sponge encased in silicone rubber, the device stays fully under the skin and is accessed only when needed. In animal tests, it survived over 100 needle insertions without degradation, remained stable in mice for over a year, and enabled data transfer at nearly 16 Mbps and electrical stimulation delivery in pigs. The outlet is designed to complement wireless systems for tasks like fast charging, firmware updates, or large data downloads. Clinical use still requires further safety evaluation.
