Cisco's new Smart Switches combine networking and security in a single hardware platform. Two form factors are available: a high-density 100G device and a top-of-rack switch with 25G ports and 400G uplinks. The key hardware components are the Cisco Silicon One ASIC (delivering 6.4Tbps of bandwidth with built-in encryption and MACsec support) and AMD Pensando DPUs that handle stateful Layer 4 firewall-like filtering. Each unit includes 128GB of RAM capable of storing millions of flows and approximately 600,000 policy rules. Traffic can be redirected through the DPU for stateful inspection on a per-VLAN or per-VRF basis, with more flexibility on the roadmap.
