# Instrument serverless apps with agentic onboarding

**[Datadog](https://daily.dev/sources/datadog)** · 5 min read · 1 upvotes · 1 comments

## Summary

Datadog's serverless agentic onboarding automates instrumentation for AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Run, and Azure Container Apps. It works via two methods: connecting an MCP-compatible AI assistant (like Claude Code or Cursor) to the Datadog MCP Server, or running a single CLI command (`npx @datadog/ai-setup-cli --product serverless`) using Node.js 22+. The tool detects existing deployment tools (Terraform, AWS SAM, CDK, Serverless Framework) and runtimes, generates appropriate configuration changes locally, and includes safety guardrails — changes are staged for review and never committed automatically.

## Questions this post answers

### How does Datadog's AI Setup CLI instrument a serverless application?

Running the command npx @datadog/ai-setup-cli --product serverless in a project directory (requires Node.js 22 or later) inspects the project's files, identifies the deployment tool and runtime, asks for needed information, and prepares instrumentation changes locally for review without requiring an MCP-compatible coding assistant.

_daily.dev surfaces new Datadog tooling for engineers automating serverless instrumentation workflows._

### Which serverless platforms and deployment tools does Datadog's agentic onboarding support?

It supports AWS Lambda (via AWS SAM, AWS CDK, Serverless Framework, Terraform, or datadog-ci, across Node.js, Python, Java, .NET, Ruby, and Go), Google Cloud Run (services and functions, via Terraform sidecar or in-container Dockerfile updates), and Azure Container Apps (sidecar via Terraform or in-container Dockerfile updates).

_Teams choosing an observability setup path across clouds can track tooling updates like this on daily.dev._

### How does Datadog's Datadog MCP Server work with AI coding assistants for serverless instrumentation?

It connects an MCP-compatible assistant such as Claude Code or Cursor to Datadog, so a prompt like "Add Datadog for AWS Lambda to my project" causes the assistant to examine the project, call Datadog's onboarding tools, and prepare configuration changes that require permission before any files are modified.

_daily.dev helps developers wiring MCP servers into their coding assistants keep up with new integrations._

> how's the terraform detection handle a monorepo with a few different lambda stacks in it? that's usually where these setup CLIs guess wrong and you end up hand fixing every third resource anyway. the staged-not-committed guardrail is the right instinct though, autocommitting infra config off an LLM guess is asking for trouble.
